Here are a few other little tidbits--glimpses into the early designs of Zilch and Solo. while I have whole sheaves of this crap, posterity certainly doesn't demand that I subject you to them.

the Beginning of it all

This is the first sketch I ever did of either of the characters. As you can see, I had several ideas for names. At one point, both robots were going to be named after historical mathematicians. However, Zilch & Solo had more ring to it than Kepler and Pythagoras. I hope.

Holy crap--feet!

Minutes after drawing the first Zilch, I drew the first Solo. I had an idea at first that there would be a pair of them who dressed and looked similar, but one was skinny and the other was fat--sort of like Laurel and Hardy.
In fact, now that I think of it, I believe a sketch that I threw away had the Hardy moustaches on Solo. Man, that was an unbelieveably crappy idea. Obviously, Solo underwent more drastic design change than Zilch, although I clearly liked his line enough to use it again in the first of the webcomics.

No, I didn't really draw this.

This is one of several early one-panel gags I experimented with. I really have no excuse for this, except that to say Zilch's fingers often dripped with blood in his first several incarnations. I believe my father's first reaction upon having this thrust before him was something like, "Get help."
I could be mistaken--it's possible that he maintained stoic silence whilst a pained expression crossed his features.
Either way. You get the idea.
